Morrison Springs, Walton County

Water is closed due to bacteria.

I personally intend to heed the warning: I already got an ear infection once this year, presumably from swimming in the spring after a heavy rainfall (the water was clear but that doesn’t mean a thing).

Morrison is fairly clear. I was surprised since there has been some rain this week with a couple of storms yesterday afternoon. The viz is at least 12′ on the upstream side of the basin. It looks like there may be some dark water on the downstream side but I’m not sure, as I was up on the SCUBA dock and not in the water. There were a few oil blobs, but no big slicks, and some leaf litter in the water but otherwise nothing gross.

Morrison is murky, which is unsurprising considoring the 2.28+” of rainfall this week. The water is tannic, murky, and there are a lot of small pil slicks. It seems there are oil slicks every time I go to Morrison this year. Tenish years ago I never remember seeing oil in Morrison and I know motor boats were in the basin, so that probably isn’t it. A lot of fish are jumping down near the bouey and there are a lot of interesting birds.

Morrison is clear! There is surprisingly little debris in the spring, despite the bad storm last week. I saw two otters, feeding around the cypress roots, and there was a strange bird calling. So far there is one class of SCUBAs down there today. Enjoy the spring!
